Responsibilities

Your Key Responsibilities:
As a Management Support Officer in the Legislation Editorial Group, you will act with integrity and objectively and will contribute to the Division’s quality control processes by editing and proof-reading legislation.

LEGISLATIVE WORK

1.Independent reading of the daily E-Gazettes and performing a 2-way proof-reading.
2.Collating and consolidating amendments from clients and legislation drafters and ensuring that the approved amendments are incorporated accurately into the printed proof.
3.Liaising with the Government Printer on the changes incorporated in the E-Gazette proofs, ensuring all changes or amendments are incorporated.
4.Keeping track of the movement of the E-Gazette proofs to ensure that publication deadlines are met.
5.Vetting of simple Subsidiary Legislation (SL) and Government Gazettes assigned from time to time, thereby ensuring that it is accurate and error-free. Adherence to strict deadlines/timelines is critical as usually these SLs and Government Gazettes are for Ministries / Statutory Boards immediate implementation. Thus the jobholder has to vet/review and scrutinize all drafts with meticulous attention to details —
• to ensure that the amendments fit into the existing law
• to be able to spot errors and inconsistencies in expression and house-style
• to spot all grammatical, typographical, cross-referencing and other errors.
6.Ensure Bills tabled in Parliament are accurate and error-free and sent to the Government Printers for copy printing in time for distribution to Cabinet Ministers and Members of Parliament at the targeted Parliament Sitting. This involves the following:
• doing 2-way proof-reading of the Bill and also to ensure that the text of the Bill complies with the appropriate formatting and stylistic requirements and is free from technical and grammatical errors
• monitoring and coordinating with the relevant Ministries with collection of Presentation Copies of Bills
7.Any other duties as assigned.

Requirements;
•All new appointees will be appointed on a two-year contract in the first instance
•A good diploma from one of the local polytechnics in any discipline, though a diploma in Law and Management will be an added advantage
•A strong command of English Language is preferred
•Highly motivated person who is able to work independently and work well in a team
•Able to handle high levels of stress and work under immense pressure
•Able to prioritize work with a good sense of time management
•Able to build rapport well with team members and clients (the Government Printer, Ministries, Statutory Boards and other government agencies) and is sensitive to the needs and concerns of others
•Able to learn quickly when facing new problems and is open to change
